The Squamish River Watershed Society continues to work with the District of Squamish, Squamish Terminals, Squamish Windsports Society, and our project partners, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Squamish Nation, to move forward with Phase 1 of the project which involves replacement of a culvert at a key location (in this case, the third culvert from the entrance at Fisherman's Entrance) with a clear span bridge to improve access for salmonids from the Squamish River into the Central Estuary.
On Tuesday, December 4, 2018, as a Committee of the Whole meeting with the District of Squamish, DOS council approved the following motion: THAT the District of Squamish support modifications to the Squamish River training berm including replacement of existing culvert with an open channel through the berm and a new single lane bridge to create an improved connection between the Squamish River and estuary, AND THAT the District of Squamish establishes a maintenance agreement with the Province and Fisheries and Oceans Canada for new infrastructure prior to accepting any maintenance responsibilities. The SRWS is continuing to discuss the overall long-term oversight of the entire three phases of the project with provincial staff and in late January hopes to initiate construction of the culvert replacement and hold a public meeting to provide an update on works completed to date and discuss the next two phases of the project: examining the realignment of the lower 750 m of the Spit and installation of a control structure across the CN Spur line to reestablish tidal flows between the Central Estuary (Site A) and upper Bridge Pond.
