My love and fascination with bats started in the early nineties, while volunteering with Jack Dubios of the Museum of Man and Nature.

I had the most amazing opportunity to squeeze into a limestone cave hidden deep within in the interior of Manitoba to band Little Brown Bats.

There were about 30,000 bats in this secret cave just settling in for a long winter's nap.

At first we plucked the sleeping, bats like furry grapes from the ceiling of the cave, carefully placing tiny bands on their thin rubbery wings. As we banded, we counted and checked them for mites or disease.

This rude awakening soon had the cave exploding with thousands of flapping wings, never once colliding with the 12 humans working within the deep dark cave.
It was an experience I will never, have never, forgotten.

I am overjoyed to be able to help bring a similar experience to the people of Squamish - a bat condo - a roosting and nursery site for our own Little Brown Bats, built locally by our very own "Batmen" of the Squamish Men's Shed.
