Valleycliffe Wetland! On Friday, August 16 the Watershed Society teamed up with Valleycliffe Elementary School PAC member, Rhonda O'Grady, to construct a small ephemeral wetland in back of Valleycliffe Elementary School along the old river bed. Once again we were joined by wetland specialist Tom Biebighauser who came up special from Kentucky to lend a hand. The funding for this exciting project came from Whistler Blackcomb Environment Fund without whom this project would not have been possible!
RBC Blue Water Project Funding
The Squamish Watershed Society has been awarded funding to assist with the 2013 Eelgrass Education Outreach Program. Our local Royal Bank of Canada has provided us with $2,500 through the RBC Blue Water Project. This funding program has been in place since 2007 to help support initiatives focused on protecting water resources. Below is a photograph of SWS' Executive Director Edith Tobe accepting the funding from RBC's local branch manager Darwin Billey. Thank you for your support RBC.
Newport Creek Upgrades
In October the SWS was able to restore Newport Creek to a functioning fish-friendly watercourse as part of an initiative with support from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and permission from land-owner Doug Day. See below for some before and after photos of the good work that was done with the support of community volunteers who helped plant over 250 native shrubs around the site.
